How to Protect Metal Parts Against Corrosion

Why metal corrodes in packaging

Corrosion needs moisture and oxygen. Temperature changes in storage or containers can cause condensation inside packs.

Approaches

  • VCI packaging releases inhibitors that form a protective layer on metal surfaces inside an enclosed pack.
  • Barrier packaging with desiccants reduces humidity inside a sealed pack.
  • Rust-preventive oils may be used by the manufacturer in some cases.

Good practice

Clean and dry parts before packing, keep VCI packs closed, and confirm the VCI product is compatible with the metals involved.

Glossary

VCI:
Volatile corrosion inhibitor.
