Stretch Film: Types, Specifications and Applications
How hand, machine and pre-stretched films differ and which specifications matter.

Types of stretch film
- Hand stretch film is applied manually, usually from a hand dispenser. It suits low volumes.
- Machine stretch film is supplied on larger rolls for pallet wrapping machines.
- Pre-stretched film is stretched during manufacture, so it is thinner and easier to apply by hand.
- Mini stretch film is a narrow roll for bundling small items.
Specifications to confirm
- Thickness (microns)
- Roll width and length
- Core size and roll weight
- Cast or blown manufacture
- Clear or coloured film
Selecting the right film
Heavier and sharper-edged loads usually need thicker or higher-performance film. Wrapping method matters too: machine films are designed to be stretched by the machine and may perform poorly by hand. Always test on your actual load before switching film.
